Intro !
Fort Boyard is a gameshow filmed on an old Napoleonic Fort in between the islands of Oleron and Aix off the west coast of France. It is near a beautiful town called La Rochelle I visited when I went to see the Fort.
Construction of the Fort first began in 1804 by Napoleon, but due to the foundations sinking in the sand the project was abandoned. The Fort is actually build on an "artificial island" in the sea. However in 1840 more tension between the French and English led to a restart of its contruction. Although by the time of its complete construction, the wars were over.
Over the years it was used for a variety of things, including an army prison.
In the mid 80s, Jacques Antoine, a creator of lots of gameshows, sees the Fort and starts to think, "wouldn't it be a good idea to have a gameshow there?". So the in the late 80s the Fort is restored and dozens of challenges are located in the cells. And so in 1990, a programme called Les clés de Fort Boyard begins, hosted by Patrice Laffont and Marie Talon (later Sophie Davant).
